Poetry ILT

Last week all of the grade 6s participated in a fun ILT all about poetry. ILT stands for Integrated Learning Task and it goes on for 3 days.

Poetry is words creating a piece of writing that tries to speak to you in ways that normal writing doesn't. People write poetry because they want to convey a message, poets put their thoughts on a piece of paper and share their feelings with the readers.

Over the last three days we did many tasks in groups like, the poetry slam where we wrote our own poems and performed them to the class or the grade with actions and movements, the coral verse where we learnt a poem and created a piece on it which we did with our drama teacher, a vocabulary presentation where we learnt vocabulary that has to do with poetry and we also did poetry writing where we wrote all different types of poems (I had to write a Haiku poem all about feelings). We did some individual tasks too like, blackout poetry where we had to construct a poem using a page of a book (I used a page from Wonder),analyzing poems where we had to answer some questions about poems and imagery where we had to draw a picture of  what we thought of when we read a poem. Last but not least, at the end of the ILT we did some self reflection by ourselves.

My favourite activity was the poetry slam because I really enjoy writing poems and I enjoy Drama. It was very fun to create actions and movements for our own poem that we wrote. I was in a group with Michelle and Mikayla, we wrote the poem that is in the picture below. Mikayla is a new girl in our school so it was nice to learn a bit about her. My worst activity was the poetry writing task, the poetry writing part was fun but the keynote part wasn't because one of the girls in my group went to music and then the WiFi went of. The most challenging activity was the blackout poetry because it was difficult to create a poem with a page from a book. Even though it was difficult, I really enjoyed it.

Performing in front of others is not a big problem for me. Sometimes I get a little bit nervous, but I still manage to do it. I learnt some new vocabulary like the words, stanza, personification, consonance, assonance, analogy, figurative language and literal language. During this ILT I discovered my love for writing poems and now I write many at home.
